This Sunday is the day Americans set aside to honor their fathers. Here are 9 things you should know about dads and Father's Day. 1. After listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909, Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash. wanted a special day to honer her father, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children on a farm. The first Father's Day celebration, June 17, 1910, was proclaimed by Spokane's mayor because it was the month of Smart's birth. 2. The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Father's Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent. 3. The rose is the official flower for Father's Day. Wearing a red rose signifies a living father, while white one represents a deceased father. 4. Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries in the world, including Canada, China, France, Greece, India, and Japan. 5. According to a 2012 poll from market-research firm Ipsos, most dads would prefer to either spend quality time with their families on Father's Day (40%) or receive no gift at all (22%). Gift cards were a distant third, at 13%. 6. Based on the unpublished Census data (2008), there are an estimated 70.1 million fathers across the nation. 24.4 million were part of married-couple families with children younger

From the Texas Tribune (Kate Galbraith): The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday issued a unanimous ruling for Oklahoma over a North Texas water district in a case over delivery of water from the Red River. The case, Tarrant Regional Water District v. Herrmann, Rudolf J. et al, pitted fast-growing North Texas against the state of Oklahoma. The Tarrant Regional Water District, which serves Fort Worth and other North Texas communities, wanted to buy water from Oklahoma reservoirs, but Oklahoma passed laws that effectively meant it wouldn’t sell. The Tarrant district sued six years ago and has spent $ 6 million on the lawsuit, according to water district spokesman Chad Lorance. On Thursday, the Supreme Court upheld a ruling from the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. “The Compact does not pre-empt the Oklahoma water statutes,” Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in the Supreme Court opinion. She was referring to the 1980 Red River Compact, which stipulates that signatory states — which include Texas and Oklahoma — get an “equitable” share of water. The Tarrant district wants water flowing south out of Oklahoma, but they say that by the time the water reaches Texas it is essentially unusable, so they want to tap the reservoirs further upstream. Oklahoma state lawmakers have declined their request. The decision could have implications for other parts of the country. For example, legal experts have been interested in whether Oklahoma’s efforts to

The Supreme Court of the United States just handed down a landmark ruling today when it comes to the practice of patenting genes from the DNA of living organisms. In a unanimous 9-0 decision, the court ruled that "a naturally occurring DNA segment is a product of nature and not patent eligible merely because it has been isolated," invalidating biotech company Myriad's claims to exclusive rights on two breast-cancer causing genes in humans, which the company argued it should be able to patent because it was the first to isolate them and identify their function. The US Supreme Court issued a ruling earlier today, saying that human genes cannot be patented. Well that ruins my awesome future business plans of patenting my genetic awesomeness and selling it out of a mall kiosk. But in something of a compromise decision, all nine justices said while the naturally occurring isolated biological material itself is not patentable, a synthetic version of the gene material may be patented. “Genes and the information they encode are not patent-eligible under [federal law] simply because they have been isolated from the surrounding genetic material,” said Justice Clarence Thomas for the 9-0 court decision. The case involves Utah-based company Myriad Genetics, which was sued over its claim of patents relating to two types of biological material that it identified — BRCA1 and BRCA2, whose mutations are linked to increased hereditary risk for breast and ovarian cancer. Since Myriad owns the patent on breast cancer genes, it is the only company that can perform tests for potential abnormalities. Investors in Myriad were pleased with the ruling with the stock soaring as much as 9% before settling back. It was up more than 3% in midday trading. Myriad had no initial reaction to the decision. At issue is whether “products of nature” can be treated the same as “human-made” inventions, allowing them to be held as the exclusive intellectual property of individuals and companies. The issue has deeply divided t
Don’t Have Internet? Stick With the XBox 360 – Microsoft

Maybe Microsoft shot themselves in the foot with this interview based on their newest console, the XBox One. In the interview, XBox executive Don Mattrick says for the people who don’t have an internet connection, Microsoft already has a console for you, the XBox 360. That’s right, don’t bother upgrading this generation if you don’t have internet. Then again, if you don’t have internet, you’re likely not reading this, but the point remains. It’s almost as if he’s talking down to people who disagree with the internet connection requirement. In my opinion, although the XBox One is about as powerful as the PlayStation 4, Microsoft is not doing themselves any good by singling out a group of people based on internet connection. Granted, more people have internet now than when the XBox 360 was released, but there are times when internet connection may be impossible. Luckily, even if you don’t have a constant internet connection, you can always play the Nintendo Wii U or Sony PlayStation 4. What did you take away from the interview?
