Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail in a hearing in Pretoria in which the Chief Magistrate, Desmond Nair, made two crucial observations: first, that the now ex-lead detective in the case, Hilton Botha, had done a terrible job (and that the prosecutor could have done a better one); and second, that Pistorius’s own account of what had happened in the early morning hours of Valentine’s Day, when he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was full of “improbabilities.” Pistorius could be free pending the trial, for reasons of law—and Nair cited precedents going back to medieval English jurisprudence—but this shouldn’t be an entirely reassuring finding for his defenders. Nair emphasized that he was not trying the case, or talking about guilt or innocence. But his devastating critique of Botha was based on the view that it would have been relatively simple for the state to come up with something better. When Nair said that Pistorius “has made a case to be released on bail,” there was a cheer in the courtroom, which had been quiet for two hours. The conditions, financially, are not strenuous: a million rands, which is about the equivalent of a hundred and twelve thousand dollars. But he can’t travel far from Pretoria without permission or return to his house (which is a crime scene). The police will check in on him; he can’t drink alcohol or use drugs; he has to turn in all his guns (he owns a few). He was also told not to be
Detroit Council Member Joann Watson: Obama Should Bail Out Detroit in Quid Pro Quo for Votes (Video)

DETROIT WANTS A BAILOUT – THEY SAY OBAMA OWES IT TO THEM– Detroit Council Member Joann Watson told a city committee in December that Barack Obama should bail out the bankrupt city in a quid pro quo for the city’s overwhelming support for him in the November election. “After the election of Jimmy Carter the honorable Coleman Alexander Young, he went to Washington and came back home with some bacon. That’s what you do. That’s what you do. Our people in an overwhelming way supported the reelection of this president. And there ought to be a quid pro quo and he ought to exercise leadership on that. Of course, not just that, by why not?” Why not? Via America’s Newsroom :

George Zimmerman has been released from jail on a $ 1million (£645,000) bond as he awaits trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin. The racially-charged case of the neighbourhood watch volunteer who shot dead an unarmed black teenager in Florida has gripped the US, after police failed to arrest Mr Zimmerman for six weeks. George Zimmerman (centre) is out on bail (Getty Images) Following a public outcry, Mr Zimmerman, who claims he killed the 17-year-old in self-defence, was detained by police and subsequently charged with second degree murder. He was released on $ 150,000 bail soon after being charged in April, but was returned to prison in June after prosecutors proved he had misled the court about his financial position and warned he had enough money to flee the country. A judge raised Zimmerman's bond to $ 1million on Thursday and he was released from Seminole County Jail less than 24 hours later. He did not speak to reporters before being driven to a safe house, but his legal team said he had used money donated by supporters for part of the bond and that his parents had agreed to put up their house as collateral. Mr Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said she was disappointed with the decision to grant Zimmerman bail and that seeing him walk free from prison 'really hurts'.

(AP) — Jerry Sandusky was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting 10 boys over 15 years, accusations that had sent shock waves through the college campus known as Happy Valley and led to the firing of Penn State’s beloved Hall of Fame coach, Joe Paterno. Sandusky, a 68-year-old retired defensive coach who was once Paterno’s heir apparent, was found guilty of Friday of 48 counts. He faces life in prison at sentencing, which is weeks away. Sandusky showed little emotion as the verdict was read. The judge ordered him to be taken to the county jail to await sentencing in about three months. Eight young men testified in a central Pennsylvania courtroom about a range of abuse, from kissing and massages to groping, oral sex and anal rape. For two other alleged victims, prosecutors relied on testimony from a university janitor and then-graduate assistant Mike McQueary, whose account of a sexual encounter between Sandusky and a boy of about 10 ultimately led to the Paterno’s dismissal and the university president’s ouster. Sandusky did not take the stand in his own defense. He had repeatedly
Husband Of Accused Millionaire Madam Doesn’t Understand Why George Zimmerman Can Post Bail But His Wife Can’t

The so-called "Millionaire Madam" Anna Gristina has been held at Rikers Island on $ 2 million bond since being arrested in February on a single count of promoting prostitution at an Upper East Side brothel. The soccer mom’s attempts to lower her bail so she could return to her four children and husband have been denied . Gristina’s husband Kelvin Gorr told New York Daily News he doesn’t understand why "violent criminals" can post bail, but his wife can’t. Here’s what he told NY Daily News when asked about George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman who shot and killed Florida teen Travyon Martin , was released on bail this weekend. Asked about George Zimmerman being granted $ 150,000 bail for the most celebrated murder in recent memory, Gorr said, “This is another case I’ll have to try to justify to the kids. They’ll see Zimmerman get bailed out after being charged with killing a 17-year-old and ask why Mom, who didn’t hurt anyone, can’t get out, too. I have no answers.” DNAInfo reports that prosecutors maintain that Gristina, who is Scottish-born, is a potential for flight risk . Please follow Clusterstock on Twitter and Facebook . George Zimmerman has been released from a Florida jail at midnight this morning after posting $ 150,000 bond. Charged with second-degree murder, he will now be living in a secret location as he awaits trial for the death of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman exited the John E. Polk Correctional Facility (JEPCF) at the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office fitted with an electronic monitoring device. The GPS device, which can pinpoint an offender’s whereabouts at any given time, will be monitored by the SCSO and Seminole County Probation. George Zimmerman Released From Jail Reports indicate that he may be allowed to leave the state , which is unusual in a murder case, but is arguably necessary for his own security. At his bond hearing on Friday morning, Judge Kenneth Lester agreed to allow George Zimmerman to post a $ 150,000 bond and leave jail pending trial. The prosecution had argued that Zimmerman should be denied bail or that it should be set at $ 1 million, but Lester disagreed on both accounts. Bail is rarely denied altogether unless the defendant is considered dangerous or a flight risk, which he is not (especially with the ankle monitor). Zimmerman also stunned the court Friday by taking the stand and apologizing to Trayvon Martin’s family , who were sitting in the courtroom. "I am sorry for the loss of your son. I did not know how old he was. I thought he was a little bit younger than I am," the 28-year-old said. "I did not know if he wa

OCCUPY OAKLAND NEEDS BAIL FUNDS! (click here to donate)
Police Chief Howard Jordan has been quoted in AP saying there were almost 400 people arrested yesterday. There are many people who were arrested that need urgent medical attention, people who have been injured by the police or do not have their medication with them that they need to treat prior conditions. We need the money to bail these people out!
Many people who have medical needs were unable to prevent themselves from being arrested, or to retrieve their medication, because the police did not give a dispersal order– they just kettled. We are still gathering names.
Our bail funds have been dwindling significantly as a result of the police backlash against occupy oakland in the last month, if you are able, PLEASE donate – 10, 50, 100, whatever you can!
