Oscar Pistorius has been granted bail in a hearing in Pretoria in which the Chief Magistrate, Desmond Nair, made two crucial observations: first, that the now ex-lead detective in the case, Hilton Botha, had done a terrible job (and that the prosecutor could have done a better one); and second, that Pistorius’s own account of what had happened in the early morning hours of Valentine’s Day, when he shot and killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, was full of “improbabilities.” Pistorius could be free pending the trial, for reasons of law—and Nair cited precedents going back to medieval English jurisprudence—but this shouldn’t be an entirely reassuring finding for his defenders. Nair emphasized that he was not trying the case, or talking about guilt or innocence. But his devastating critique of Botha was based on the view that it would have been relatively simple for the state to come up with something better. When Nair said that Pistorius “has made a case to be released on bail,” there was a cheer in the courtroom, which had been quiet for two hours. The conditions, financially, are not strenuous: a million rands, which is about the equivalent of a hundred and twelve thousand dollars. But he can’t travel far from Pretoria without permission or return to his house (which is a crime scene). That’s what you do. That’s what you do. Our people in an overwhelming way supported the reelection of this president. And there ought to be a quid pro quo and he ought to exercise leadership on that. George Zimmerman has been released from jail on a $ 1million (£645,000) bond as he awaits trial for the murder of Trayvon Martin. The racially-charged case of the neighbourhood watch volunteer who shot dead an unarmed black teenager in Florida has gripped the US, after police failed to arrest Mr Zimmerman for six weeks. George Zimmerman (centre) is out on bail (Getty Images) Following a public outcry, Mr Zimmerman, who claims he killed the 17-year-old in self-defence, was detained by police and subsequently charged with second degree murder. He was released on $ 150,000 bail soon after being charged in April, but was returned to prison in June after prosecutors proved he had misled the court about his financial position and warned he had enough money to flee the country. A judge raised Zimmerman's bond to $ 1million on Thursday and he was released from Seminole County Jail less than 24 hours later. He did not speak to reporters before being driven to a safe house, but his legal team said he had used money donated by supporters for part of the bond and that his parents had agreed to put up their house as collateral. Mr Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said she was disappointed with the decision to grant Zimmerman bail and that seeing him walk free from prison 'really hurts'.

George Zimmerman has been released from a Florida jail at midnight this morning after posting $ 150,000 bond. Charged with second-degree murder, he will now be living in a secret location as he awaits trial for the death of Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman exited the John E. Polk Correctional Facility (JEPCF) at the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office fitted with an electronic monitoring device. The GPS device, which can pinpoint an offender’s whereabouts at any given time, will be monitored by the SCSO and Seminole County Probation. George Zimmerman Released From Jail Reports indicate that he may be allowed to leave the state , which is unusual in a murder case, but is arguably necessary for his own security. At his bond hearing on Friday morning, Judge Kenneth Lester agreed to allow George Zimmerman to post a $ 150,000 bond and leave jail pending trial. The prosecution had argued that Zimmerman should be denied bail or that it should be set at $ 1 million, but Lester disagreed on both accounts. Bail is rarely denied altogether unless the defendant is considered dangerous or a flight risk, which he is not (especially with the ankle monitor).
