Microsoft’s Anti-Google Campaign Gets a Boost, From Google

For the last few months, Microsoft has been running a pointed PR and ad campaign against Google , where it accuses the search giant of screwing over its customers . You gotta hand it to Microsoft: Yesterday they got Google to help promote their message for them. On Wednesday afternoon, shortly after Google had finished a marathon presentation at its I/O developer conference , reports surfaced that Google’s YouTube had sent Microsoft a cease and desist letter, demanding that Redmond shut down a YouTube app it had built for its Windows Phone. The issue, in a nutshell, is that the Microsoft app, built on YouTube’s public data feed, violates the video site’s terms of service , primarily because it strips out ads YouTube inserts alongside its videos. Windows Phone users can still watch YouTube videos, via their Web browser, but the experience isn’t as slick as a dedicated app. So: Bad for Windows Phone users! But while it’s tempting to turn this into a he said/he said, there’s little to hash out, fact-wise. There’s no dispute that Microsoft’s Windows app violates Google’s terms. And Microsoft, which has been complaining about access to YouTube for years , had to know exactly what it was doing. It also knows how to play nicely with YouTube, as it did with an Xbox app the two companies built together and launched last year . The only question is why Microsoft went ahead and built the app, anyway. Here we have to do some guessing, as bot

Obama Selects Billionaire Campaign Backer as Commerce Secretary

Barack Obama has once again dropped all pretenses of being a progressive president by nominating Penny Pritzker—a major campaign contributor with a personal fortune estimated at $ 1.85 billion and a history of dogging bank regulations—to head the Commerce Department. Pritzker is listed by Forbes magazine as one of the 300 wealthiest Americans. Her membership in the 1 percent is attributed to her family’s founding role in the Hyatt Hotels Corporation, of which she is a sitting board member. The Los Angeles Times writes that the company has had “rocky relations with labor unions.” Pritzker appears to be no friend of teachers. When she stepped down from the Chicago Board of Education in March, a union official said she “has a long and storied history as an anti-labor and anti-worker kind of boss.” She’s also a candidate for possible financial criminality. Her family owned Illinois-based Superior Bank, which failed in 2001 among charges of fraud and mismanagement. The bank was involved in the kind of subprime lending that brought the national economy down in 2008. DSWright at the FireDogLake News Desk puts Obama’s pick in perspective: “Who better to be the Commerce Secretary? Someone who is at odds with labor unions and has problems complying with bank regulations should really understand American commerce today,” he writes. “Pritzker is supposed to have passed a thorough vetting process regarding problems in her business practices in

This "Launch Day" ad for Facebook Home, aka Facebook's new mobile UI, brings the non-pornographic online distractions of one engineer to vivid, Jumanji-esque life. The ad, which is a significant step up from the earlier airplane spot, was shot on location at Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., campus, and the people in it are members of the actual product team behind Facebook Home. (These guys must be less camera shy than Intel's workforce.) The spot also reinforces 2013 as the year of the goat in advertising. Remains to be seen whether Home itself belongs in the category of much-derided farm animal. Second new spot, "Dinner," posted after the jump. The two new spots, like the airplane one, were done by Wieden + Kennedy.

Chinese propaganda campaign could sap $13 billion in sales from Apple

Since the middle of last month, the government of China has been engaged in a propaganda campaign against Apple, starting with an attack on Apple's warranty practices. Reports from state-run media outlets, including China Central Television and newspaper People's Daily, alleged that Apple's warranty and repair policies in China were unfair in comparison to other country's. Apple CEO Tim Cook issued an apology to Chinese customers and pledged that Apple's staff in China would be better trained on warranty issues. The long-term results of what has so far been three weeks of consistent state-driven propaganda assaults haven't yet surfaced. If we let history serve as a guide, there are plenty of examples of Chinese state campaigns against foreign companies severely impacting their bottom lines in the People's Republic. Citigroup analyst Glen Yeung points out that similar allegations against Toshiba in 1999 pulled down the company's notebook sales in China down far enough that they lost their top spot in the sales charts. In December of last year, Yum Brands – the company that owns KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell – was the target of the Chinese government. Yum operates around five thousand KFC outlets in China. Government reports alleged that chemical residues were detected in limited quantities in a small portion of KFC's chicken supply. While the government never formally fined or punished Yum, the company's sales in the first two mon

The president raised a billion dollars for his reelection campaign, but the staffers who engineered his victory may be worth even more to corporations and other groups that are eager to unlock the trade secrets that made the Obama brand so successful. "Everyone wants to know what the special sauce is," says Holly Goulet, senior vice president of the American Program Bureau, a speakers bureau that has encountered rising interest from business groups in hearing from Obama alumni. "There's been a blurring of the lines between politics and business now." While it's virtually a rite of passage for political veterans to hit the speaking circuit or hang out a shingle as a "strategic consultant," it isn't the political horse race or the Washington game that intrigues many audiences and prospective employers so much as the analytics and tools used on the campaign trail that could have a commercial impact well beyond the Beltway. "There's less interest in the politics and more interest in the data and new media side," says Jim Messina, President Obama's 2012 campaign manager. "It's smart of everyone to take a look and say, 'What do they know that we don't?' " After Obama's reelection, former adviser David Axelrod recalls that "one of the first calls I got was, 'Who are the young geniuses? We want to find out if we can hire them.' " Axelrod, who is now a paid contributor to NBC News and MSNBC and runs the Institute of Politics at the Univer
