Tonight on Movie News After Dark , we explore some of the unfriendly feelings that are had toward J.J. Abrams and his Star Trek films, we look at the real life Tony Stark (maybe), see a bit about Natalie Portman’s latest and as always, try to wedge in some Doctor Who . Why We Love, Hate and Love to Hate J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek – Over at Movies.com, Evan Saathoff writes an excellent piece about the mixed emotions the geekosphere seems to have around J.J. and his pair of Trek films. It’s tonight’s must-read. Hannibal and the consequences of violence – In an interview with Buzzfeed, Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller talks about violence and death on TV. The man’s handle on such things is the core reason why Hannibal is such a striking show. That and Mads Mikkleson. Jane doesn’t have traction – The eternally troubled production, Jane Got a Gun , starring Natalie Portman, is not winning over any buyers at Cannes, where its rights are being sold. As it turns out, director Lynne Ramsay left over disagreements on “final cut.” More on that later, I’m sure. 15 failed American remakes of UK shows – First, I didn’t even know that there was an American version of Spaced . Second, that Joel McHale-led version of The IT Crowd was awful. The Return of the Coming of Age Film – According to this well-written piece by Calum Marsh, the coming-of-age film is back. I wasn’t sure it ever left, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a point there. Is Elon Musk

Marvel’s phase two is in the works, though much of what’s going on behind the scenes, within the story, is being hid from us. Kudos to them, cause personally, I don’t want too many spoilers ruining my experience of what they have lined up for us in this round of super hero awesomeness. They’ve shown us enough Iron Man 3 to kill a man and rumors fly about everything else, but now it’s time for the next step in showing us just how fkn amazing their next round of movies is going to be. The Thor 2: The Dark World trailer has just hit and it’s looking good enough to make you poo yourself. Check it out below: Either their marketing team has a fkn genius editing their footage down to this trailer, or this film is going to blow us away. After rewatching the trailer for the fourth time, I’ve finally achieved faith that phase 2 is going to make us proud. Maybe you like it, maybe you don’t, but I’m spending my $ 12 on opening night. You should check it out too, later this year on November 8 th . Thanks to /film for the heads-up.

How Boston exposes America’s dark post-9/11 bargain

To put it mildly, this has been a bad week for democracy and a worse one for public discourse. In the minutes and hours after the bombs went off in Boston last Monday, marathon runners, first responders and many ordinary citizens responded to a chaotic situation with great courage and generosity, not knowing whether they might be putting their own lives at risk. Since then, though, it’s mostly been a massive and disheartening national freakout, with pundits, politicians, major news outlets and the self-appointed sleuths of the Internet – in fact, nearly everyone besides those directly affected by the attack – heaping disgrace upon themselves. We’ve seen the most famous TV network in the news business repeatedly botch basic facts, while one of the country’s largest-circulation newspapers misreported the number of people killed, launched a wave of hysteria over a “Saudi national” who turned out to have nothing to do with the crime, and then published a cover photo suggesting that two other guys (also innocent) might be the bombers. We’ve seen the vaunted crowd-sourcing capability of Reddit degenerate into self-reinforcing mass delusion, in which a bunch of people whose law-enforcement expertise consisted of massive doses of “CSI” convinced themselves that a missing college student was one of the bombing suspects. (He wasn’t – and with that young man’s fate still unknown, how does his family feel today?) Continue Reading…

Former Navy SEALs Brandon Webb, author of “The Red Circle”, and Howard Wasdin, author of “SEAL Team Six”, were recently interviewed on Fox News concerning the controversial torture scenes in the new blockbuster film “Zero Dark Thirty”. The film has come under attack by many liberals with most claiming that torture such as displayed in the film did not play a role in tracking down Bin Laden and that it is not an effective way to gather intelligence. Webb and Wasdin counter these beliefs with their own expert opinions in the video below. Super Bowl Goes Dark Minutes After Beyoncé’s Performance

Well, that was one way to quiet the lip-synching haters/give credence to rumors of Illuminati : Minutes after Beyoncé's inspired performance and just moments after a record-setting kickoff return from the Baltimore Ravens' Jacoby Jones, power went out in over half of the Superdome. CBS's James Brown said the outage was caused by a power surge. Another CBS reporter who spoke with NFL officials said the blackout was caused after an outside power source was lost. NFL and stadium officials reset the lights and, after a 35-minute delay, power was restored. So far, no official reason has been given but, for now, certain groups are denying responsibility: It wasn't us. — TheIlluminati (@TheIlluminati) February 4, 2013 But of course, they would say that. And just before the blackout, Twitter went down. Let no one ever question Beyonce's power again. [ Image via AP ]

Zero Dark Thirty Tops US Box Office

Gangster Squad shoved to third Even as controversy swirls around the film regarding its accuracy and portrayal of interrogation techniques, Bin Laden hunt thriller Zero Dark Thirty scored a resounding victory at the American box office this weekend, expanding screens and landing at the top for the first time. And though Kathryn Bigelow missed out on a Best Director Oscar nomination, she’ll likely be happy to see her latest film make $ 24 million in one weekend. The solid win beat out two new arrivals, and there was room for another surprise as horror spoof A Haunted House trumped Gangster Squad for second place. And that’s despite the latter film boasting much bigger names and enjoying a massive, all-media marketing campaign. Still, director Michael Tiddes and co-writer Marlon Wayans pulled it off, making $ 18.1 million. Rueben Fleischer’s based-on-truth tale of cops ‘n’ mobsters, meanwhile, could only manage $ 16.7 million. Elsewhere, Django Unchained fell to fourth with $ 11 million, while Les Miserables was down to fifth and scored $ 10.1 million this weekend. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey sank from third to sixth, earning $ 9 million, while Lincoln actually rose one place to seventh with $ 6.3 million. At eighth we find Parental Guidance ($ 6.1 million), Texas Chainsaw 3D fell rapidly down to ninth with $ 5.1 million and Silver Linings Playbook added screens and jumped up a couple of places to 10th and $ 5 million. Zero Dark Thirty: Hollywood Hunts Bin Laden

Zero dark thirty seemed like time the movie finally ended. The long-awaited film that chronicles how the CIA tracked down the mastermind of 9/11 opened in Washington this weekend. The Oscar-nominated movie seemed as long as waiting for it to come to D.C., covering more than a decade from the collapse of the Twin Towers to the raid on the Osama bin Laden compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. There are no new revelations here—and it takes about three hours to learn that. Whether it is worth seeing Zero Dark Thirty depends on how much time you have to spare and how much you remember about the war on terrorism. Zero Dark Thirty is certainly not a real history lesson. Like any Hollywood interpretation of real events, incidents are condensed, dramatized, and manipulated to make for a watchable movie. While the film does raise lots of legitimate issues about how two Presidents have managed the “Long War,” a movie is not the place to look for answers. Nor is Hollywood’s story of bagging bin Laden much help in seeing the way forward. What the film doesn’t make clear is that by the time the CIA found bin Laden, he was living in semi-retirement. Taking him out was an act of justice, but it didn’t make America all that much safer. Likewise, both sides have evolved their tactics a good deal over the last decade. Our side, in particular, is fighting a lot differently than it did at the start—and there are serious questions about whether what the W
