Twenty children were among at least 91 people killed when a powerful tornado swept through an Oklahoma City suburb, tearing down blocks of homes and two schools, local officials said. The state medical examiner's office released the latest death toll but the number was climbing rapidly, as emergency crews combed through smashed homes and the collapsed remains of an elementary school in Moore, Oklahoma. Stunned weather forecasters reported a two-mile (three-kilometer) wide swath of vicious winds and television news helicopters tracked a dark funnel plowing through densely-packed suburbs. "We've had a massive tornado, a huge one that has passed through this community," Oklahoma's Governor Mary Fallin told a news conference. "We know there are a lot of injuries. We know we've lost a tremendous amount of structures throughout this community and throughout the state," she said, as the Moore police chief urged people to leave the area. "There are a lot of safety issues, gas lines, power lines, things of that nature, that we have to take into consideration and there's just not much else that can be done there at this time," police chief Jerry Sillings said. The 91 dead included at least 20 children, most of them under the age of 12, Amy Elliott, of the state medical examiner's office, told AFP. 51 dead as massive tornado roars through US suburb MOORE: A tornado of rare power roared through an Oklahoma City suburb, killing at least 51, flattening neighborhoods with winds up to 200 mph (320 kilometers) and destroying at least one school. Officials said children were among the dead. The death toll was expected to rise, an Oklahoma Medical Examiner's Office spokeswoman said. Rescuers swarmed the debris as darkness fell. More than 140 people were being treated at hospitals, including about 70 children. Some were in critical condition. ''Hearts are broken'' for parents looking for their children, Governor Mary Fallin told a news conference. The ferocious storm _ less than 1 percent of all tornadoes reach such wind speed _ ripped through the suburb of Moore in a Midwest region of the U.S. known as Tornado Alley. Block after block lay in ruins. Cars and trucks were left crumpled. The National Weather Service estimated that the tornado reached up to a half-mile (.8 kilometers) wide and was an EF-4 on the enhanced five-point Fujita scale, the second most powerful type of twister. In video footage, the dark funnel cloud moved slowly across the landscape for more than half an hour, scattering shards of wood, pieces of insulation, shingles and glass over the streets. A tornado in North Texas has killed at least six people, injured close to 100, and destroyed dozens of homes on Wednesday. The tornado devastated parts of North Texas, cutting through the city of Granbury at close to 8 pm. Officials said the tornado cut a path of destruction through two neighborhoods in the town of 8,000 people, leaving recovery officials to sift through the wreckage and try to determine a death toll. “Some were found in houses. Some were found around houses,” Sheriff Roger Deeds said at a midnight press conference. He added that the death toll from the Texas tornado could still rise. Residents in the area described a scene of total destruction , with trees split and power lines toppled. “The house across from mine looked like it was destroyed,” said 22-year-old Allacia Jenny, who saw the Texas tornado cut through her neighborhood. Darrin Vasquez, another witness, said the Texas tornado was “very loud and violent,” and described the storm as a vacuum that seemed to be lifting everything up . “Thank God we’re all right. We all said our prayers,” Vasquez said, adding that he used a mattress to shield his family from debris in a bathroom of their home. The tornado caused injuries to even more people, with 50 taken to a hospital in Granbury, 14 of whom were admitted. Another 14 people remained unaccounted for.
