First hashtags , now a news reader? Joanna Stern at ABC News received a snail-mail invitation today from Facebook for a media event on June 20 that read, “A small team has been working on a big idea. Join us for coffee and learn about a new product.” Many are speculating that Facebook will unveil some type of news reader. With the company knowing exactly what type of content its 1.1 billion users are sharing, it makes sense. Also, when Facebook announced the arrival of hashtags earlier this week, it said that the move was just the first step in a series of new features that “surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics.” Drew Meyers wrote a guest post on GeekWire a few months ago after Google Reader went down , touching on what could be done to redefine the feed reader experience. “Turn my feed reader into a community,” he proposed. “Turn my reader into discussions, conversations, and, ultimately, connections.” Facebook is certainly in position to do something like that — here’s to hoping that it will be something a little more exciting and valuable than the company’s most recent product unveil, Facebook Home . Previously on GeekWire: You can now use #hashtags on Facebook Reach staff reporter Taylor Soper at taylor@geekwire.com or on Twitter @Taylor_Soper . Follow us on Twitter @GeekWire .

Why Facebook isn’t the right company to create a Google Reader replacement

Google Reader is meeting its end in just a few weeks, and there’s no doubt it’ll be traumatic for users of the beloved service. There are a variety of replacement options already on the market, with more expected to launch in the next couple of weeks, and I’m curious to see what rises to the top. But one replacement product that I wouldn’t use? An RSS news reader from Facebook. In one sense, it wouldn’t be surprising for Facebook to launch an RSS reader at its press event next Thursday in Menlo Park, as some people have speculated . Anyone using Google Reader has to find a replacement by July 1 , and it’s still a pretty wide-open market. Products like Feedly seem to have a head start , but there’s still time for someone to roll out a new product and win over users. We’ve seen that Facebook has no problem quickly launching products to try to disrupt a growing market, even if it’s not a sure thing they’ll succeed. (Just look at Poke, the company’s challenge to Snapchat .) And between the company’s launch of hashtags last week to improve the real-time nature of the news feed (even if I think hashtags are better saved for ironic conversation ), and the addition of new tabs for following people on the new News Feed , Facebook clearly has ambitions to be more of a resource for news . (After all, brands and advertisers love the real-time nature of constantly updated live events and news.) But as a hardcore Google Reader user, I have no

Iran’s Supreme Leader Posted A Cartoon To Facebook Explaining Why American Elections Suck – Yahoo! Finance

Today marks the first round of voting in the Iranian election, with voters working at polls to decide who should succeed Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the president of Iran. We should know who the winner is, or if another round of voting is needed, within a few hours. Ignoring the anti-Zionist statements, which are dumb and offensive for obvious reasons, the core message of the cartoon is that Iran's election is actually far more democratic than the U.S. election. On a surface level, it's possible to understand the argument. It's true, for example, that in practice there are only two possible candidates for the U.S. presidency — the candidates put forward by America's two major political parties. While the voting public plays a role in the selection of these candidates, a large part of their selection depends on the internal workings of the parties. It is also possible to have a president elected without winning the popular vote. Iran is offering six different candidates in this election, including both reformist choice Hassan Rouhani, or the conservative favorite Saeed Jalili. Whomever eventually becomes president will have to win over 50% of the vote, either in the first round or in a second round run-off. However, Iran is hardly a full democracy. For one thing, the Iranian constitution gives the unelected Ayatollah Khamenei much of the power in the country, including control of the powerful military. Khamenei has been Supreme leader

If you’re looking to place video advertising on a social network, YouTube is currently the obvious choice. With over a billion unique visitors and four billion hours of video watched each month, it’s by far the most popular online video sharing platform and its reach is comparable to national TV. However, it looks as if there may be a new contender for your advertising budget in the coming months in the form of Facebook video ads. Are these likely to be a new alternative to YouTube PPC? Let’s take a closer look at both to discover more. Facebook Video Ads It may be a little unfair to speculate on the effectiveness of Facebook video advertising as it hasn’t actually launched yet, but it seems that the initial format has already been confirmed. Video ads that are a maximum of 15 seconds long will be placed in the timelines of Facebook users, based on the data that Facebook has stored about them. These video ads will start automatically, although there will be no sound until the viewer enables the audio. The cost of these ads is expected to be around $ 20 per 1000 views and initially users will only see ads from one advertiser each day. In terms of audience, Facebook has a similar reach to YouTube; reporting 1.11 billion active users per month. Their key advantage may well be in the amount of information they have about their users, which will allow video ads to be more accurately targeted towards a specific demographic. While YouTube

Sources: Facebook in Talks With Feds to Allow FISA Disclosures

According to sources close to the situation, Facebook is in serious discussions with the federal government to allow it to disclose requests under national security laws, including the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), to the public. Under this approach, Facebook would presumably be able to disclose aggregate numbers of national security requests, including FISA disclosures, as well as their scope. It would also apply to all other Internet companies, said sources. As with all such dicey talks on an explosively controversial issue, the discussions might not result in any action. In addition — as per usual — the devil will be in the details here, as well as the cooperation of other big Internet companies. It is notable that Google is not part of these discussions, said sources, but non-cooperation among Internet companies is typical in Silicon Valley. But it’s clear something’s got to give. Earlier this week, after a myriad of allegations that top Silicon Valley Internet giants had given authorities unprecedented access to their huge stores of information via a National Security Agency program called PRISM (which was denied by all of them), Facebook, Google and Microsoft execs all called on the government to allow them to lift restrictions on reporting national security requests for information. While the companies have had difficulties been clarifying how they do respond to legally valid government requests for informa
