In the social media age, it has become a tedious ritual to track the tasteless things that people often tweet during unfolding tragedies, and to take tiny-minded satisfaction in shaming them. The devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma are no exception. Comedian and Daily Show co-creator Lizz Winstead used the tornado to lampoon the current scandal-mania in a series of jokes, then apologized for it. Fox News contributor and Redstate.com editor Erick Erickson offered a tweet that was a mirror image of one of Winstead’s jokes, and has not apologized. Lizz began with a now-deleted tweet referencing the current IRS controversy, sent, as she later noted , before she knew of the storm’s devastating, still-unfolding toll. “This tornado is in Oklahoma so clearly it has been ordered to only target conservatives,” she tweeted . She also joked about the tornado bumping her from a guest spot on MSNBC’s Martin Bashir show, before apologizing about an hour and a half later. “Made a political joke, Twas before devastation revealed. In hindsight, had I understood, I would have refrained. Beyond sorry. # LetMeHaveIt ,” she tweeted, adding “Worse thing is I am from MN! I know this!! Bad joke. Bad Timing. Just bad.” To those trying to downplay her transgression, Lizz tweeted “No, it’s worth giving me shit. I was an idiot.” One of her jokes, however, turned out to be oddly prescient. Mocking Republican scandal fever, she asked “How long has Obama known ab

Cenk Uygur Savages Obama On Gun Control: ‘Hard To Find’ Progressives Who Support Him Anymore

On Tuesday night, Cenk Uygur , host of The Young Turks on Current TV, tore into President Barack Obama ’s unsuccessful push to get members of his party in Congress to support new gun laws. Uygur, a self-described progressive, said that many people of a similar political persuasion are rethinking their support for the president. “I’m telling you right now,” Uygur told his audience, “people who follow the news regularly – those progressives – it’s really hard to find any of them that will support Obama anymore.” Uygur referenced a report in The New York Times in which Michael Shear and Peter Baker note that Obama does not operate in the White House like many of his predecessors. “After more than four years in the Oval Office, the president has rarely demonstrated an appetite for ruthless politics that instills fear in lawmakers,” they write. “Is Obama weak?” Uygur asked. The Nation blogger Leslie Savan said that, while Obama may be leveraging his colleagues behind closed doors, his style of governance is “very frustrating.” “He talks a good game on many different issues,” Savan said. “This happens over and over again.” Savan added that she was not clear as to why the president did not exert more effort in the push for new gun control laws. “I’ll tell you why,” Uygur interjected, “because it’s not about him.” Uygur said that when issues are not “related to his personal career,” Obama’s approach is more lackadaisical. He went on to a

Next week’s visit to Emmerdale sees Adam Barton (Adam Thomas) celebrating his 21st birthday with a house party and a few drinks… But for Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton) a few drinks turns into way too many drinks, and not only does she embarrass her boyfriend Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher) by giving Adam a lapdance, she also conveniently forgets that she’s supposed to be taking over from Amy (Chelsea Halfpenny) in babysitting Andy’s kids Sarah and Jack so that she can attend the party too. As we’ll see in Wednesday’s episode, when Andy’s had enough of seeing Kerry behaving badly, he goes to pick up the kids from Amy, and as he prepares to take them home, he tells a dolled up Amy how pretty she looks… Amy thanks him for the compliment but reveals that she’s now not going to the party, given that she too doesn’t want the embarrassment of seeing her mum legless. And as they talk about Kerry, the moment takes a turn for the passionate and they kiss! In the hour long episode that air on Thursday 18 April, Amy and Andy agree their kiss was a mistake, but it’s clear Amy fancies Andy… However, it soon becomes clear to Amy that Andy’s worried sick that Kerry will find out about the kiss, and he pleads with Amy not to say anything. She assures him that she won’t say a word, but her disappointment that Andy evidently doesn’t feel anything for her is clear when Amy later confides about what happened to David Metcalfe (Matthew Wolfenden). Google engineers find a way to filter robocalls the way Gmail filters spam

Quote The Federal Trade Commission just announced the three winners of its Robocall Challenge, a contest meant to crowdsource the solution to the robocall scourge that prompts more than 200,000 consumer complaints every month. The first-place award was split between two individuals, programmers Aaron Foss and Serdar Danis. The "technology achievement award," reserved for a submission affiliated with a large company, went to two Googlers, Daniel Klein and Dean Jackson. "It's really up to the private sector now." When complaining to the FTC, consumers often wondered why it wasn't possible to screen robocalls with the same effectiveness as Gmail screens spam. Klein and Jackson's solution is not unlike Google's email spam filter , which prompts users to report bogus messages. Their system allows users to instantly report originating phone numbers to an online database; on the other side, phones or external hardware automatically check the database every time a call comes in. It also includes a mechanism that blocks "spoofed" numbers, which obfuscate the true origin of the call, and weighs additional factors such as call volume, frequency, and inbound-to-outbound ratio. Danis's first-place solution was similar to Google's. He suggested an external device (which could also be implemented as a mobile app or provider feature) that "autonomously compiles whitelisted, blacklisted and graylisted numbers databases." The system also detects wh

SpotLite GPS lets you find your dog with an iPhone

Earlier this month we pointed out the SpotLite 2.0 GPS tracking device by Securus, Inc. that helps you locate and find your pet . The durable, waterproof device offers 24-hour, real-time tracking or your favorite canine. SpotLite 2.0 is even backed by the American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery (AKC CAR) service, so finding Fido becomes a much easier process than walking around the neighborhood shouting the dog's name. I spent a few days testing the device with my Boston Terrier Batgirl (that's her at right), who may or may not have been happy about conducting her first tech review. Here's my look at the SpotLite 2.0 GPS pet tracker. The SpotLite 2.0 device The "why" of this device is pretty clear: dog owners love their pets and losing one can be a stressful occasion. Anyone who has conducted an "analog" search for a lost dog — wandering about shouting their name — knows how ineffective and unpleasant that can be. The SpotLite lets you see exactly where the dog is in real time. That's great. Gallery: SpotLite 2.0 GPS Pet Tracker The SpotLite 2.0 device itself is fairly small. It's about 2.75" long, 1.75" wide and 0.75" tall (note these are my own hasty measurements, not official dimensions). Its exterior is mostly plastic and feels very sturdy indeed, and Securus notes that it is waterproof. I didn't test this but I don't see where water would get in, either. The top of the device features an SOS button (more on that lat

Sen. Portman: We Need to Find Out If Obama Ever Issued the Order to Secure Benghazi Consulate

On Friday Barack Obama told Denver’s WUSA TV that on 9-11 he gave the directives to “make sure that we are securing our personnel and doing whatever we need to” to ensure their safety in Benghazi. Late on Friday former Assistant Defense Secretary Bing West told FOX News that if the directive was made to secure our personnel there would be a paper trail. Today Ohio Senator Rob Portman told the FOX News Sunday that we need to find out if this order was ever issued. There was a shocking breakdown operationally not having the security there in the first place. And not to respond to these guys and their pleas for help for seven hours during a firefight. It’s unbelievable. And, now we’re hearing that the President of the United States, based on his own words, issued a directive immediately after he found out about the firefight saying he wanted to be sure the people on the ground were safe and they were getting what they needed. It didn’t happen. This means that either the president’s order was not followed. Which would be a breakdown in terms of the White House procedure or it means the order wasn’t issued. We need to find out about this. It’s not about politics. Retired Army Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer said Saturday he has sources saying President Barack Obama was in the room at the White House watching the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya unfold. The post Sen. Portman: We Need to Find Out If Obama Ever Issued the Order to S

Rescuers end effort to find body in Fla. sinkhole

Crews planned to begin demolishing a Florida home Sunday that is perched over a huge sinkhole, deeming it too dangerous to keep searching for the man swallowed into the earth from his bedroom. The search for Jeff Bush, 37, was called off Saturday. The 20-foot-wide opening of the sinkhole is almost completely covered by the house and rescuers feared it would collapse on them. Two neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution. Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill said heavy equipment would be brought in to begin the demolition Sunday morning. "At this point it's really not possible to recover the body," Merrill said, later adding "we're dealing with a very unusual sinkhole." Jessica Damico, spokeswoman for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, said the demolition equipment would be placed on what they believe is solid ground and reach onto the property to pull apart the house. The crew will try pulling part of the house away from the sinkhole intact so some of the residents' keepsakes can be retrieved. Bush was in his bedroom Thursday night in Seffner — a suburb of 8,000 people 15 miles east of downtown Tampa — when the ground opened and took him and everything else in his room. Five others in the house escape unharmed as the earth crumbled. On Saturday, the normally quiet neighborhood of concrete block homes painted in Florida pastels was jammed with cars. Engineers, reporters, and curious onlookers came to the scene. At t
