Stocks Rocket, Amazon And Google Get Going

U.S. stocks are sharply higher Monday morning ahead of one of the most anticipated Fed meetings in the last couple years. Volatility in Japan continued as the Nikkei bounced 2.7%, and the S&P 500 has followed suit with a bounce of 1.15%. Markets were extremely erratic last week, but ultimately ended lower for the third of the last four weeks. The S&P has formed another upper level wedge-type pattern for us to navigate. Back on May 22nd we had the bearish reversal day as the S&P put in a high of the day at 1687. About 10 sessions later we touched our 50-day MA and bounced pretty hard off it on June 6th. Last Thursday we retested that 50-day moving average and held it again. There is a pretty defined downtrend that stands at around 1640-1648 on the S&P. If you were thinking short and not committed to it, a close above this level should give you a few things to think about. Next resistance is 1658-1662. Google (GOOG) pretty much held where it broke out from around $ 865 and should be watched this morning. If the market holds up today, the next hurdle to GOOG would be a close above $ 885-891. It’s up .5% so far. Amazon (AMZN) had a nice move last week then pulled back and retested that breakout area of $ 270. Now it needs to get back above $ 277 in order to make another attempt at that $ 285 area. It’s up 2% this morning. Apple (AAPL) still acts weak. Watch to see if they try to sell this first. If it does hold up, it needs to close back

Google Launch Loony Project For Balloon-Based Broadband?

The Google X Labs division is well-known for their attempts to create innovations in technology, most of them on the brilliant yet unusual ideas pile (such as a self-driving car and Google Glass ), and it appears as though their latest brainstorm will at least be able to be filed into the latter category, after the search engine giant announced a project that could see internet access delivered via balloons. The experiment is being given the name ‘Project Loon’, and will see a number of balloons floating around the earth providing connection through each balloon’s position in ‘stratospheric winds’. Even Google themselves call the effort ‘a moonshot’, having defined their plan as: “…the combination of a huge problem, a radical solution, and the breakthrough technology that might just make that solution possible.” The aim is to provide a nothing-to-lose experimental solution for the task of ‘connecting vast areas of the world’ that face trouble in creating or maintaining ‘ traditional connectivity methods ‘. Beginning the project in its pilot programme phase, however, was a location which wouldn’t instantly be thought of as part of the problem, but nonetheless Google X launched 30 solar-powered balloons over Canterbury Region in New Zealand, with 50 testers trialling the new connections on offer, which are believed to be equivalent to 3G mobile speeds. Those connections are theoretically achieved by balloons flying around the world
Facebook introducing something on June 20 — will it be a Google Reader replacement?

First hashtags , now a news reader? Joanna Stern at ABC News received a snail-mail invitation today from Facebook for a media event on June 20 that read, “A small team has been working on a big idea. Join us for coffee and learn about a new product.” Many are speculating that Facebook will unveil some type of news reader. With the company knowing exactly what type of content its 1.1 billion users are sharing, it makes sense. Also, when Facebook announced the arrival of hashtags earlier this week, it said that the move was just the first step in a series of new features that “surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics.” Drew Meyers wrote a guest post on GeekWire a few months ago after Google Reader went down , touching on what could be done to redefine the feed reader experience. “Turn my feed reader into a community,” he proposed. “Turn my reader into discussions, conversations, and, ultimately, connections.” Facebook is certainly in position to do something like that — here’s to hoping that it will be something a little more exciting and valuable than the company’s most recent product unveil, Facebook Home . Previously on GeekWire: You can now use #hashtags on Facebook Reach staff reporter Taylor Soper at taylor@geekwire.com or on Twitter @Taylor_Soper . Follow us on Twitter @GeekWire .

Why Facebook isn’t the right company to create a Google Reader replacement

Google Reader is meeting its end in just a few weeks, and there’s no doubt it’ll be traumatic for users of the beloved service. There are a variety of replacement options already on the market, with more expected to launch in the next couple of weeks, and I’m curious to see what rises to the top. But one replacement product that I wouldn’t use? An RSS news reader from Facebook. In one sense, it wouldn’t be surprising for Facebook to launch an RSS reader at its press event next Thursday in Menlo Park, as some people have speculated . Anyone using Google Reader has to find a replacement by July 1 , and it’s still a pretty wide-open market. Products like Feedly seem to have a head start , but there’s still time for someone to roll out a new product and win over users. We’ve seen that Facebook has no problem quickly launching products to try to disrupt a growing market, even if it’s not a sure thing they’ll succeed. (Just look at Poke, the company’s challenge to Snapchat .) And between the company’s launch of hashtags last week to improve the real-time nature of the news feed (even if I think hashtags are better saved for ironic conversation ), and the addition of new tabs for following people on the new News Feed , Facebook clearly has ambitions to be more of a resource for news . (After all, brands and advertisers love the real-time nature of constantly updated live events and news.) But as a hardcore Google Reader user, I have no

Project Loon: Google wants to provide internet access to all… with balloons

About two thirds of the people on the planet don’t have access to the internet. Plenty of people have ideas about how to change that — it’s cheaper to build 3G cellular towers in some parts of the world than to lay new cable or telephone wires, for instance. But Google has another idea: Balloons. The company is starting a pilot project that involves sending a fleet of balloons about 12 miles up, and using them to beam internet signals to the ground. They’re calling it Project Loon . Google says the result is a network that provides 3G-like speeds to areas that would otherwise be hard to reach. All you need on the ground is a special antenna attached to your building that lets you connect to the the balloon network. Getting things to work in the air is a bit more complex. The balloons will move through the air, so Google has to move them up and down through different air streams to control their movement in order to offer continuous internet access on the ground. Each balloon has a solar panel attached, as well as the technology to let anyone within a 40 kilometer (25 mile) diameter connect to the network. This weekend Google is rolling out a relatively pilot project in New Zealand. If things work, Project Loon could be the start of something big… it doesn’t solve the problems of getting antennae, computers, phones, and other devices to hard-to-reach areas. But those issues seem trivial when compared with the challenges of buildin

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie Concept Good Enough for Google

Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie Concept Good Enough for Google is a post by Adam Mills from Gotta Be Mobile . Google didn’t announce a new version of Android at Google I/O 2013 but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have major updates in store for Android owners. The first of these updates should be Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, rumored to be arriving in July, while the biggest update of the year is thought to be Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. And while we haven’t heard much about the real Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie , Android enthusiasts may hope that it resembles a Android 5.0 concept that recently emerged. At Google I/O 2013, the company failed to offer an Android update for smartphone and tablet owners, instead choosing to focus on upgrades to its current services. However, rumors suggest that a new Android update is close with whispers pointing to an Android 4.3 Jelly Bean release in the not-so-distant future. Rumors suggest the update could arrive as soon as this month with July also being mentioned as a possibility. Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie is rumored for later this year. This is a concept. Android 4.3 isn’t thought to be a massive upgrade from Android 4.2. Instead, Google is likely saving its best for an update later in the year, an update that is thought to be Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie rumors are scarce with the only whispering suggesting that the update could be arriving in late October, just like last year’s Android 4.2

Those who enter Kim Dotcom into Google’s search box will get millions of results. Still, Google has doubts that the man is real. “The name you provided on your Google+ page, Kim Dotcom, does not look like a name,” Google informed Dotcom. The company suspects that Dotcom is a pseudonym or a business name instead. If Mega’s founder doesn’t clarify his unusual name within 4 days Google+ says his account will be suspended. Perhaps he should tell the Google+ team to Google his name? Kim Dotcom isn’t Real Source: Google Doesn’t Believe Kim Dotcom is Real
