The attack targeted a facility just northwest of the Syrian capital, very close to the site of a similar attack late January which was implicitly confirmed by Israel, the source said. He also confirmed Israel was behind an earlier strike on a target very close to Damascus airport which took place early on Friday, which also struck Iranian arms destined for the Lebanese Shia movement. “Any time Israel learns about the transfer of weapons from Syria to Lebanon, it will attack,” he warned. According to Syria’s official SANA news agency, Sunday morning’s attack targeted the Jamraya military research centre near Damascus, in the Eastern Ghouta region. Following the strike, the Israeli air force went on high alert, although the Jewish state was not anticipating a significant response from Damascus, the source said. “The air force is now on high alert, the highest in recent years,” he said

It was only a week ago that Iran was shaken by a major 6.1 earthquake, striking just 100 km away from the Busher nuclear power plant: a location so "opportune" some, so inclined, saw in this phenomenon anoter demonstration of the HAARP's capabilities. Those same people will then hardly be surprised to learn that moments ago the entire middle east, from Dubai to Delhi, shook in the aftermath of yet another massive earthquake, this time measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, which once again was located as the USGS reports, some 86 km East South East of Khash, Iran. According to preliminary reports, the USGS says there is possibility of heavy damage in area of epicenter, and an estimated 359,000 people felt very strong to severe shaking. USGS also estimates that 16K may have felt 'severe' shaking, 343K 'very strong' shaking, 1.7M 'strong' shaking; 1.1M 'moderate' shaking. An Iranian official was promptly on the tape saying hundreds of dead expected from quake in southeast of country, even as the Russian company that built the Busher NPP saying there was no damage from the quake. How much more shaking can either the existing Iranian nuclear power plant, or the much maligned nuclear facility in Fordow, sustain before they go off in a big glowing mushroom cloud: that is the question. From Al Jazeera : A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck southeastern Iran near the border with Pakistan, reportedly killing at least 40 people with casualti

One of the ongoing perplexities of President Obama’s Syria policy has been the stark contrast between his muscular rhetoric and halting, hesitant actions. On the one hand, he has insisted that the country’s dictator Bashar al-Assad “must” go and has predicted that his fall is all but assured. But on the other, he has thus far limited himself to authorizing aid in the form of training and intelligence for Syria’s beleaguered rebels. While we’d be the last to conclude that the case for intervening in Syria is open and shut, we have argued here at Via Meadia that the case for action outweighs the case for doing nothing. Barely. We’ve been making the case that the consequences of inaction were too high for quite a while now, and with every passing week, as the situation on the ground becomes increasingly dire and pushes the more reasonable among the rebels to the sidelines, we are convinced that our initial assessment was the right one, and that the choices available to President Obama and the West generally grow less attractive with each passing day. But we are not in the Oval Office, and our decision doesn’t have the weighty consequences which the President must bear. It would have been a difficult decision to make a year ago, and it’s certainly no easier now that the war has dragged on so long and shattered Syrian society so thoroughly. We may disagree with the White House on this one, but on questions as tough as this one it’s ha

Obama calls for Iran to take ‘immediate’ steps over nuclear program

US President Barack Obama urged Iran on Monday to take “immediate and meaningful steps” to move “toward an enduring, long-term settlement” with the world over its disputed nuclear program. In a video message in honor of the Iranian Nowruz holiday, Obama said that if Tehran took such action “the Iranian people will begin to see the benefits of greater trade and ties with other nations, including the United States.” Iran is under increasingly biting international sanctions imposed over its nuclear program, which the United States and other Western nations fear is aimed at producing an atomic weapon, but which Tehran says is entirely peaceful. Both the United States and Israel have refused to rule out military action to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, and the issue is likely to top the agenda this week during Obama’s first trip to Israel as president. Obama said last week that it would take “over a year or so” for Iran to build a nuclear bomb. In the message in honor of Nowruz — the Persian New Year — Obama appealed to ordinary Iranians, saying “the people of Iran have paid a high and unnecessary price because of your leaders’ unwillingness to address this issue. “As I’ve said all along, the United States prefers to resolve this matter peacefully, diplomatically. “Indeed, if — as Iran’s leaders say — their nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, then there is a basis for a practical solution.” Obama delivered his first

OBAMA: Iran Is A ‘Year Or More’ Away From Developing A Nuclear Weapon

JERUSALEM (AP) — Iran is about a year away from developing a nuclear weapon and the United States remains committed to doing everything in its power to prevent that from happening, President Barack Obama said in an exclusive interview aired Thursday on Israeli TV. Just days before he is to arrive in Israel for his first presidential visit, Obama told Israel's Channel 2 TV that while he still prefers diplomacy over force, but that a nuclear Iran is a "red line" and all options remain on the table to stop it. "Right now, we think it would take over a year or so for Iran to actually develop a nuclear weapon, but obviously we don't want to cut it too close," he said. "So when I'm consulting with Bibi (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) as I have over the last several years on this issue, my message to him will be the same as before: 'If we can resolve it diplomatically that is a more lasting solution. But if not I continue to keep all options on the table.'" The timeline for action against Iran has been one of the most fraught disputes in an already tense relationship between Obama and Netanyahu. Israel has repeatedly threatened to act militarily should Iran appear to be on the verge of obtaining a bomb, while the U.S. has pushed for more time to allow diplomacy and economic sanctions to run their course. Obama's forecast gives more time than that of Netanyahu, who has signaled that the coming months present a point of no ret
