The Chicago Bulls put up what could be considered the franchise's worst offensive performance since 1999 in Game 4 against the Miami Heat on Monday. Any time you're harkening back to an era in Bulls history when Kornel David was capable of leading the team in the scoring and Dickey Simpkins and Randy Brown were starters, you know you've entered truly dubious air. Indeed, the Bulls really were that bad in Game 4. Chicago shot 19-of-74 from the field, good for 25.7 percent. They scored fewer than 70 points in a playoff game for only the second time in franchise history and finished with only one more field goal for the game than Miami did just in the paint. It got ugly, and now the Heat seem poised to put this gutsy but ultimately doomed Bulls season to rest for good in Game 5. Chicago's Game 4 in perspective The Bulls made only 19 field goals in Game 4, their lowest total since 1999. It's easy to look at the field goal percentage and think the Bulls simply had a rough shooting night in Game 4, and there is some truth to that. Chicago missed a host of open jumpers in the first half that contributed to its 11-point halftime deficit and finished just 2-for-17 from three-point range. Nate Robinson's 0-for-12 night got plenty of attention, as it should. But the Bulls' troubles ran deeper than missing open shots. Miami's defense deserves plenty of credit here. The Heat essentially beat the Bulls at their own game: attacking the ball han

Someone asked the Master about the principles of … traveling into the vast inane. – From the Bao Pu Zi, AD 320, Joseph Needham, Science and Civilization in China Welcome to the vast inane. Today the “sequester” — mindless, across-the-board cuts of military and domestic spending designed to be abhorrent — will go into effect. Republicans claimed a “big victory” as House Speaker John Boehner shut down any negotiations and sent the House home. The cuts will cost jobs and add to the headwinds facing the economy. The sequester will be followed by operatic melodrama over keeping the government open after the end of March and keeping the government from defaulting on its debt beginning in the middle of May. The deficit is falling faster than any time since the demobilization after World War II, Americans are afflicted with mass unemployment and falling wages, but Washington will be traveling into the vast inane for the foreseeable future. The media is focused on the possible effects of the cuts. But what is actually being sequestered is any sensible debate about the fundamental changes needed to revive the middle class and make this economy work for working families once more. The old economy — and the failed economic ideas that drove it – benefited the few, while undermining the broad middle class, even before the collapse. Sadly, that old economy is back. Consider the unsustainable imbalances that contributed directly to the Great

Investors found a lot with which to be disappointed in Apple’s first quarter — the fourth-most profitable quarter of any company ever . Record-breaking revenue. Record-breaking profit. Record-breaking iOS device sales. Average weekly revenue that rose to $ 4.2 billion from $ 3.3 billion in the year-ago quarter. But amid that parade of, ahem, letdowns that savaged more than 10 percent from Apple’s share price in after-hours trading Wednesday, was some good news about the company’s performance in Greater China, a region that is becoming increasingly important to the company’s growth — a region so important that Apple has made it a new operating segment. Apple’s sales in Greater China for the quarter rose to $ 6.83 billion from $ 4.08 billion a year earlier. And that’s with the new iPads shipping late in the quarter. Meanwhile, iPhone sales in the region more than doubled. And that’s without China Mobile, the country’s biggest mobile operator, which doesn’t yet sell the iPhone. “If you look at Greater China … our revenues were $ 7.3 billion in the quarter,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said during the company’s earnings call. “That’s incredibly high. It’s up over 60 percent, year on year. And that’s comparing a quarter with 13 weeks to one with 14 weeks. So the underlying growth is higher than that. We saw exceptional growth in iPhones into the triple digits. … [And we] saw very nice growth with iPad.” So Apple is still on a tear in China. And, ac

A masked gunman wearing camouflage opened fire Tuesday in a busy Portland mall, killing two people and injuring one before killing himself, officials said. Austin Patty, 20, who works at Macy’s, said he saw a man in a white mask carrying a rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest. He heard the gunman say, “I am the shooter,” as if announcing himself. A series of rapid-fire shots in short succession followed as Christmas music played. Patty said he ducked to the ground and then ran. His Macy’s co-worker, Pam Moore, told the Associated Press that the shooter was a short man …
