New York City police shut down the Brooklyn Bridge for about an hour Monday while they investigated an abandoned vehicle . Nothing suspicious was found in the vehicle, NYPD Lt. John Grimple told us. Grimple said they do not yet know why the vehicle was abandoned, but police will be investigating further. The SUV didn't have any license plates, and police aren't yet sure who it belongs to. Police started clearing the bridge at about 6 p.m., and it was closed to traffic in both directions. They called the vehicle "suspicious." Detectives gave an all-clear and said they would start reopening the bridge at about 7 p.m, Steve Brusk of CNN report ed. The blue SUV sat abandoned in the Manhattan-bound lane, according to an NBC News reporter on Twitter. A bomb squad — including a bomb-sniffing dog — investigated the car, according to a live feed from CBS. A man from the bomb squad removed what looked like pieces of cardboard from the vehicle. LOS ANGELES Michael Ray Smith and his wife, Barbara Jean, are exceedingly pleased about what they are not going to do on their coming vacation: travel or sightsee; visit museums; go to plays, movies, or amusement parks; window-shop; gamble. The list goes on: They will not visit family or friends, play cards, hike, water-ski, sky-dive, or go bungee jumping. Instead, the college professor and his wife, an elementary school teacher, have chosen to fill their daily activity schedule for four weeks straight with just two agenda items: (1) diddly, and (2) squat. "We do read, but the main event is to do absolutely nothing," says Mr. Smith, a communication studies professor at Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. "Our goal is to recharge, reboot, disconnect, mentally let go." He says they still have to water the plants and cut the grass, "but mostly we practice the fine art of porch- or gazebo-sitting." RECOMMENDED: Top 5 ways to save on your summer vacation The North Carolina couple has a 20-by-30-foot wooden deck facing a stand of trees that blocks sight of the neighboring house. They have an electric fan to foil mosquitoes, and several sofas and deck chairs arranged for relaxation – and nothing else. This will be their third year in a row in which they have spent a month exploring the virtues of idleness over activity. "I think this is what everyone needs, especially educators," says Smith. With gun control dominating much of the news cycle recently, CNN is going all in. Starting today, the network is airing a series of special reports on the issue, continuing with the coverage on Wednesday as well. The package, Guns Under Fire: A CNN Special Report on Background Checks , seeks to take an in-depth look at the national conversation surrounding the polarizing topic. “According to the latest polls, 9 out of 10 Americans support tougher background checks,” the press release notes, “so how is it that Congress can do nothing?” That’s the question CNN appears to want to answer — or at least try to. Piers Morgan , a gun control supporter if there ever was one, and Wolf Blitzer will be taking a look at the role of background checks, while Dana Bash interviewed former Rep. Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly — both of whom have spoken about their support for increased gun control despite owning guns. The network has fairly long list of which CNN personalities will be exploring various aspects of the issues. For example, Candy Crowley will explore the question, “Are we moving toward federal gun registry?” Lest you think the coverage won’t include the Almighty Magic Wall, John King is apparently going to put that to use. It looks like CNN’s goal is aimed to be informative, a type of explainer that can’t be condensed into eight-minute segments with feisty panels. How it actually turns out, we’ll have to see. It’s no easy f

Posted on ANDPOP : If you were wondering why #Panda was trending hardcore on Twitter last night, you probably missed one of the best moments on The X-Factor EVER. Here’s why contestant Panda ROCKS. 1. She got out of the hospital the day before auditioning because she had pneumonia. Two f*cks weren’t given about it and she wouldn’t let anything hold her back. 2. She’s in love with with Simon Cowell and we’re pretty sure she’s the only woman who could handle his “unique” personality. Demi Lovato even tweeted: “Alright…who else thinks I should get @ SimonCowell a “Single” necklace so he can match Panda?” 3. Panda’s name origin is very unique. Her mom had her while she was in jail. Her cell mate was white so they came up with the name Panda. Hm… 4. She has a spectacular old-timey voice. She got a yes from every judge (even Britney Spears). 5. Immediately following the show she had to be transported to the hospital because she overworked herself. Simon considered putting Demi in quarantaine because she hugged Panda and pneumonia is contagious. Meanwhile, all Panda worried about what Simon would think of her. Watch the latest video at FoxNews.com CHRIS WALLACE, FOX NEWS SUNDAY HOST: The president says that he won a mandate to raise taxes on the wealthy. PRESIDENT OBAMA (11/9/12): “On Tuesday night, we found out that the majority of Americans agree with my approach.”) WALLACE: Do you agree that voters sent that message, gave him that mandate? MITT ROMNEY: Well, two things. He won. But a majority of Republicans were elected to the House, the people's chamber. So they also won. And they — they ran on a — on a — a platform of saying not to raise taxes. But the president won. And he got what he wanted. Now he's saying I want to do it again, I want to do more. I — I don't think that's the right course, because that will hurt the economy and make it more difficult for jobs to be created for the people who need those jobs. WALLACE: So, how would President Romney, at this moment, be handling your opposition in Congress, the Congressional Democrats? MITT ROMNEY: Well, first of all, I can go back to my experience as a governor, and that is, you don't attack the opposition when you need to sit down and — and work with them. Uh, number two, you show trust. You don't change the deal. You don't move the goal posts. Bob Woodward said that the president has moved the goal posts on sequestration. You can't do that. The currency in politics is trust. And then number three, you've got to spend time with them. Instead of being out campaigning, which

Behind the scenes, President Obama has grown increasingly pessimistic about a deal with Republicans to head off the looming sequester cuts, according to Democratic governors who had a private briefing with the president and the vice president on Friday. According to the New York Times, Democratic governors who spoke with reporters after that session said that the president admitted his public campaign to force the GOP to the table was not working, and that no deal is in sight. "What he was saying is, 'There's nothing that I can do to get these folks to come to the table with a balanced approach," said Vermont governor Peter Shumlin. Added Martin O'Malley, the governor of Maryland: "I think he's long-term optimistic. Short-term, he believes Republicans seem hell-bent on slowing job recovery through sequestration, which in some perverse way they see as a win." Barring a deal, the automatic across-the-board cuts in spending will begin on March 1. Continue Reading…

Listen To Justin Bieber’s Break-Up Song, “Nothing Like Us,” About Selena Gomez

No joke, my eyes welled up just a bit listening to Justin Bieber ’s new song “Nothing Like Us.” Blame it on the fact that I am a thirty-year-old single female living in New York City with no Valentine in sight (February 14th is totally looming over my head!), but the acoustic ballad about the Canadian’s pop star’s recent break-up with Selena Gomez definitely pulled at my heartstrings. “Lately, I been thinkin’ ’bout what we had,” Bieber sings. “I know it was hard/It was all we knew/Have you been drinking to take all the pain away?/I wish I could give you what you deserve/’Cause nothing can ever, ever replace you/Nothing can make me feel like you do. I gave you everything, babe/Well, everything I had to give/Girl, why would you push me away?” The 18-year-old debuted the song exclusively on Billboard.com and opened up about his on-again, off-again relationship with the pop princess. “At the end of the day, there’s nothing like us, you know? That’s just it. It is what it is. People are going to relate to that,” he confessed. “I’m not in the happiest place that I’ve ever been. I’m trying to get through what I’m going through….[but] I have my really close friends to cheer me up and keep me going.” Listen to “Nothing Like Us” below off of Beiber’s latest album, Believe Acoustic . Kleenex, anyone?
