CPAC: Amity Shlaes Says Coolidge Presidency, Restraint Lessons for Modern Times

A healthy throng of mostly young readers greeted Coolidge author Amity Shlaes at a CPAC book signing yesterday, eager to hear her thoughts on a president she dubbed The Great Refrainer. President Calvin Coolidge is suddenly chic among some conservatives for his smaller government legacy, but Shlaes cautions Breitbart News that the leader’s re-emergence as an influential figure comes with an asterisk. “It’s currently a tough sell with the stock market so high,” Shlaes says of Coolidge’s economic principles. As the entitlement problem grows more ferocious, though, the American public will hunger for a leader with an “accurate assessment” of the situation, someone echoing Coolidge’s measured approach. Voters will seek out someone who “cares about data and the truth,” she says. Shlaes took a mixed review of "Coolidge" from The New York Times in full stride, and she was more than eager to talk about why Coolidge endures. “He was like a good airport. He did what he said he would do … he was a brand you trust,” she says. Shlaes shares her thoughts on Coolidge and why he matters now in the newest course offered at Prager University. "He got the kind of results men of action long for today … economic results," Shlaes says in the course.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day: The Obama Presidency and the Tragic Fate of the Civil Rights Movement

President Barack Obama takes office today on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for the second time as the first black president of the United States. If his election and re-election represent the fulfillment of Dr. King’s vision in a superficial sense, Obama’s goal of “fundamentally transforming” the United States into a government-centered social democracy represents one of the deeply challenging aspects of Dr. King’s legacy. The great tragedy of civil rights movements–not just in the United States, but across the world–is that the end of discrimination has been closely tied to the start of state-directed redistribution. The result is that many of those who were formerly held down by the state believe that their success depends on state intervention. And the terrible irony is that the state’s role ensures that many who begin their freedom on the bottom rung, stay there. In the U.S., the end of Jim Crow in the South was swiftly followed by the Great Society, which created perverse incentives for individuals not to work and families to split apart. In South Africa, affirmative action actually came before the end of apartheid, because the white minority government wanted to create a small black middle class as a buffer against political change. “Black economic empowerment” after apartheid enriched a few wealthy, politically-connected blacks while the many of the poorest became poorer. And yet in both countries, the intended benef

Conservative radio host Mark Levin appeared Fox News’ America Live this afternoon to discuss how his “fury” over President Obama ‘s “tyranny” in his use of executive orders. “He keeps telling us he won re-election,” Levin said of the president. “Congratulations! But guess what, the Constitution wasn’t up for election, it wasn’t for a referendum,” he continued, before rattling off the list of ways he believes the president has expanded his office into an “imperial presidency,” including “unilateral action” on immigration, the tax implications of ObamaCare, “attacks on religious liberty,” and the potential use of executive order on gun control. “What the hell is this?” Levin continued. “He was elected president. Congratulations. This guy makes Richard Nixon look like a man who followed the law all the time. I think we have an imperial president. He sounds imperial, he’s arrogant as hell and I’m furious about this.” Host Megyn Kelly pushed back that many also found Obama’s Republican predecessor George W. Bush to be “imperial” in his presidency, vastly expanding the powers of the executive branch. Levin didn’t like the comparison: “People better wake up to this. This is not what Bush did or what anybody else did. This president is different and in a very, very negative way and the fact that a lot of people voted for him, that’s extremely troubling, but the Constitution, as I said, that wasn’t up for grabs and it’s still not up for g

Why should President Obama be reelected? Well, he presided over the assassination of Usama Bin Laden, and he has made sure the poor have free cell phones! I am afraid that the free phone is the most important issue some people can think of…

Politics and the Law A Lawless Presidency Fox News Channel The Daily Caller Automobile Magazine President Obama Delphi Non-Union Pensions Protect Unions Bankruptcy Law Review law and politics Fourteenth Amendment Author's Note: President Barack Hussein Obama has been running an administration that is lawless at best. Today begins a series of articles about "A Lawless Presidency". This series will illustrate a long chain of behavior by the President and his administration that clearly illustrates that they believe they are above the law or will just make it up as they go with a deliberate intention of creating a socialist nation and economy. The purpose of this series it to help create an informed electorate motivated to remove this lawless President and create a Republican majority in the Senate in November's election and restore our Republic to a government that respects the Constitution and the rule of law. The Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution is often referred to as the Equal Protection amendment. In other words, all people must be treated equally under the law. While researching for this series, I came across a situation that was such an egregious violation of equal protection that many people who heard me mention this in a recent speech could not believe it could possibly be true. Bankruptcy Law Review , earlier this month, posted a link to an article about Obama's Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner's plans

More brilliance from the ‘most brilliant president in American history.’ This is almost as pathetic as Obama’s comment on how to fix the economy last month.. Remember ‘Go Buy A Thingamajig?’ Now there’s a term limit “thing” in the presidency. Most brilliant president ever!
