There seems to be no end to what Google Glass can do. The latest advancement to come to Google’s futuristic headgear is an app that gives Glass facial recognition capabilities. MedRef for Glass is meant to give medical professionals the ability to instantly scan a patient’s face, allowing them to quickly access the patient’s medical history and other information. Additionally, doctors and nurses can add voice notes to patients’ histories and complete notes regarding patients’ treatments. As Mashable reported , the app was created by a group of programmers at a medical hackathon. One of the programmers, Lance Nanek, said the app will be especially helpful to medical professionals, who are often asked to deal with a large amount of information. MORE: Top 10 Features of Google Glass “Some people I talked to said hospitals are full of very busy people, often with their hands full, working with a lot of information. So, Google Glass making [that information] wearable is especially looked forward to there,” Nanek said. The source code for MedRef can be found on Nanek’s Tumblr page . Check out the video above for a full demo of the app in action. Of course, while MedRef is meant for use in the medical field, it could also have uses in areas including law enforcement, or even as an easy way to remember the names and numbers of all of the people you met at your last big conference. via: Mashable document.domain = 'laptopmag.com'; Don’t be

Beyond Recognition and Misrecognition: the Shooting at Oak Creek Gurdwara

Source: www.3quarksdaily.com – Monday, August 06, 2012 Amardeep Singh at his own website: I don't know if the shooter would have acted any differently if he had really known the difference between the turbans that many Sikh men wear and a much smaller number of Muslim clerics wear — or for that matter, the difference between Shias, Sunnis, and Sufis, or any number of specificities that might have added nuance to his hatred. As I have experienced it, the turban that Sikh men wear is the embodiment a kind of difference or otherness that can provoke some Americans to react quite viscerally. Yes, ignorance plays a part and probably amplifies that hostility. But I increasingly feel that visible marks of religious difference are lightning rods for this hostility in ways that don't depend on accurate recognition. I am not sure why the reaction can be so visceral — perhaps because wearing a turban is at once so intimate and personal and so public? Walking around waving, say, an Iranian flag probably wouldn't provoke quite the same reaction. A flag is abstract — a turban, as something worn on the body , is much more concrete and it therefore poses a more palpable (more personal?) symbol for angry young men looking for someone to target. Whether or not that target was actually the "right one" was besides the point for the Oak Creek shooter. More here .

Apple sued in China over voice recognition patents

Apple ’s legal troubles in China continue. This time Cupertino is being sued by a company called Zhi Zhen Internet Technology over voice recognition patents. Zhi Zhen claims it holds patents for a Chinese voice language assistant used for its Xiao i Robot service, and that Siri infringes those patents. There’s quite a big gap between Siri’s introduction in October and the lawsuit that’s just been filed, although the company says it reached out to Apple back in May and heard no response. Zhi Zhen reportedly filed the patent back in 2004, and is going ahead with the case as a result of Apple’s Siri language expansion in June to include Mandarin and Cantonese. A spokesperson for the company has said that it wants Apple to stop infringing on its technology and bear the cost of any legal fees. Apple settled a case with Chinese company Proview not too long ago, paying out $ 60 million over an iPad trademark dispute in mainland China. Apple has also recently been sued by another Chinese company, Jiangsu Xuebao, over a Snow Leopard trademark. That company claims to have filed a trademark for the word “Xuebao”, which translate to “Snow Leopard.” The company is seeking CNY 500,000 (~$ 78,700) in damages and an official apology. Ready for another post-IPO Facebook acquisition rumor? Israeli business publication Calcalist reports (in Hebrew) that the social networking giant is close to purchasing face recognition technology company Face.com . Newsgeek reports that the deal size is between $ 80 million and $ 100 million. This is pure speculation at this point, and we currently don’t have any sources backing up the story, but it’s an acquisition that would make a ton of sense. In fact, Face.com has long been rumored to be an acquisition target for Facebook, even way before there was talk about the social networking company going public. Face.com builds accurate facial recognition software that could help Facebook users identify people in shared photos faster, on desktop and mobile. The Israeli startup built a popular Facebook application itself called Photo Tagger , which lets people scan their (or their friends’) photo albums for known faces, and just recently launched a mobile facial recognition app for iOS called KLIK . The startup also operates a platform of its own by offering a public API . Facebook, meanwhile, just launched a camera app for the iPhone of its own, acquired Instagram and may very well end up building not only a proprietary mobile operating system but even its own phone , and it is rumored to be interested in acquiring Opera Software to gain cross-platform browser products and expertise. A Face.com acquisition would fit neatly into those

Way to not tick off the privacy hounds, Google! For its social service, Google+ , the company is rolling out facial recognition features, but only if you want it to. The new “Find My Face” feature is something you have to specifically opt into. Find My Face, if and when you enable it, has the ability to find any photos your friends have uploaded that include your face. It will also prompt your friends to tag you if you appear in new and previously uploaded images. You can choose to accept or reject tags on a one-by-one basis. And you can also turn off the feature anytime. Facial recognition (and subsequent privacy-related media meltdown) is familiar turf, both for Google and for social networks in general. When reporters got wind of an upcoming Google mobile app for facial recognition , the reactions around the web weren’t entirely positive. In fact, we said at the time that it “sounds great for stalkers.” But the Googler in charge of that project, Hartmut Neven, said it wasn’t yet being released for exactly that reason. “We recognize that Google has to be extra careful when it comes to these [privacy] issues,” Neven said. “Face recognition we will bring out once we have acceptable privacy models in place.” In the summer of 2011, Facebook started rolling out facial recognition globally . While we said at the time that privacy concerns around the feature were “vastly overblown,” regulators didn’t quite agree. Several European priv
