Coming Soon from Google: a $649 Samsung Galaxy S4 Running Stock Android

While not a new Nexus phone, Google said Wednesday plans to start selling an unlocked version of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 through its Google Play store. Like Nexus devices, the unlocked Galaxy S4 will be able to get Android updates as they are released rather than having to wait for the carrier and device maker to customize and approve the new software. Google’s Hugo Barra made the announcement at Google’s I/O conference, generating lots of oohs and aahs for the features–right until he mentioned the price. It will cost a hefty $ 649 when it goes on sale June 26. (The price drew outright boos at the Google I/O viewing party in Chicago, I’m told.) The phone will support LTE networks from both AT&T and T-Mobile USA. Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann has always been a film nerd. He spent summers as a kid making movies, but had more fun shooting than editing. His interest dropped off, but filmmaking lingered in the back of his mind. Nearly two decades later, Hofmann's iPhone camera roll is a dense grid of video clips, not photos. He built an app called Vine to satiate his desire to create short films, which now has

US Official Says North Korea Could Launch Missile Soon

Officials close to the Obama administration are saying that a North Korean missile launch is likely to happen soon. Barbara Starr of CNN reports that "the most recent intelligence showing it is likely Pyongyang has completed launch preparations, " likely referring to the flurry of missile movements reported on in the last two weeks. From CNN: The administration believes a test launch could happen without North Korea issuing a standard notice to commercial aviation and maritime shipping warning them to stay away from the missile's path, according to the official, who declined to be named because of the sensitivity of the information. He said the launch could be "imminent" but also cautioned the United States "simply doesn't know." The New York Times ' David Sanger recently wrote about leaked White House plans in the case of a DPRK ballistic missile launch. The likely reactions from the U.S. and ROK range from watching the missile fly into the ocean, or shooting it down, depending on its trajectory and intended target. Officials say the missile could be the Musudan or KN-08 , two missiles about which America has little intelligence. Until recently it was thought the Musudan could be an inert prop . Though previous warnings have come from studied analysts, this most recent comes from the U.S. administration. It's possible the world will find out of Kim Jong-Un's missiles are really just props. Matt Flynn remains the property of the Seahawks, multiple days after reports emerged that he’ll be traded to the Raiders. But the widespread belief for now is that the trade will indeed get done, and that it will happen soon. The two teams have haggled over draft-pick compensation, with former Green Bay colleagues Reggie McKenzie…

Google Keep official: taking on Evernote as soon as possible

Today Google Keep has been revealed as the company’s first attempt to create a fully-integrated note-taking system for all your smart devices. With Google Keep, you’ll be able to quickly write down ideas on your Android smartphone, access them on-the-go with your smartphone or tablet, and grab them back at home with your desktop computer. Starting with voice transcription built-in (as it is with most Android devices and their apps these days), you’ll find Google Keep working with Google Drive to keep all of your clippings, ideas, and bits and pieces safe wherever you go! With Google Keep you’ve got a system that’s built-in to Android, this allowing Google to compete on a level that’s basically dominant when it comes to all other note-taking systems. With connectivity with Google Drive and the rest of the Google apps right out of the box, you’ll find this system to instantly be one you’ll feel obligated to check out. And if you’re working with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or higher, you’ll find it showing up real quick. With Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or higher, you’ll be able to add your own lock screen widget to start the fun right from the get-go. If you want to check this app out on anything lower than that version of Android, you’ll have to do so with the understanding that you might not get every feature available to the highest grade system. You’ll also need at least Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich to begin – grab the app on the [Go

Video sharing service Vine reportedly to launch as standalone iOS app soon, play nice with Twitter

Contrary to reports from earlier today that the video service Vine would be a built-in Twitter service, All Things D’s Peter Kafka is now stating that it will be a standalone app available in Apple’s App Store. The app, which was rumored but never confirmed to have been acquired by Twitter, was used by its creator to tweet out a 6 second clip earlier this morning. That clip was then shared by Twitter CEO Dick Costolo. All that tweet really showed was that Twitter’s new Cards product was playing nice with Vine links now, something it did not do in the past. As you can see from the embedded tweet below (something that Twitter also just improved), your video will play right in the tweet. Steak tartare in six seconds. vine.co/v/bOIqn6rLeID via @ dhof — dick costolo (@dickc) January 23, 2013 Twitter recently added photo filter services to its main apps, encouraging users to directly share images to the service, rather than using intermediate networks like Flickr or Instagram. Vine will remain a standalone app that will allow you to shoot short video clips by tapping and lifting your finger from the screen. This doesn’t rule out closer integration in the future, but places video as something that Twitter would like to continue to see coming from the outside of the service…for now. Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes coming soon to Google Play

Probably the best news I’ve read all night, one of my all-time favorite puzzle RPG’s will be finally making its way to Android. Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes was released for the Nintendo DS back in 2009, and a few years later, was given an HD remake for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. Only a few days ago, Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes was officially announced as coming to iOS devices (lucky bastards) on the 24th of this month and before you get up in arms over the absence of Android version in their announcement, M&M:CH publisher TagGames confirmed to Pocketgamer that the game would, in fact, be coming to Android devices at a date “to be announced.” Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes is a puzzle RPG (weirdly, one of my new favorite genres) similar to titles like Puzzle Quest. Players face off against computer controlled opponents in a game of match-3, to execute powerful attacks and summon powerful allies to aid you in battle. Seriously — it’s loads of fun and looks beautiful on an HD television. We’ll tell you more about the game once it’s finally released into the Google Play Store, for now, check out the release trailer for the iOS version. [via DroidGamers ]
