Google Opens Up Some More: The ‘Secret’ Computer System It Uses To Give Info To NSA Is Secure FTP

Google is continuing to open up about the supposed "secret" program by which it hands data over to the NSA that has been subject to so much attention over the last week. And, once again, the story seems to be less than what was originally reported. Google's now said that when it receives a valid FISA order for information, the "secret" computer system it uses to get the required info to the NSA isn't some crazy server setup or dropbox… but secure FTP . Instead the company transmits FISA information the old fashioned way: by hand, or over secure FTP. “When required to comply with these requests, we deliver that information to the US government — generally through secure FTP transfers and in person,” Google spokesman Chris Gaither told Wired. “The US government does not have the ability to pull that data directly from our servers or network.” However, the company does say that the government has asked for more, but that Google has refused. “We refuse to participate in any program — for national security or other reasons — that requires us to provide governments with access to our systems or to install their equipment on our networks,” he said. “We have been asked to do things in the past and we have declined.” It's increasingly beginning to appear like the terminology used in the leaked PowerPoint presentation was not as clear as it should be, concerning the level of the NSA's integration with Google (and, perhaps, other companie

Obama pushes to fix ‘broken’ immigration system in weekly address

See, we define ourselves as a nation of immigrants. The promise we find in those who come from every corner of the globe has always been one of our greatest strengths. Itâs kept our workforce vibrant and dynamic. Itâs kept our businesses on the cutting edge. And itâs helped build the greatest economic engine the world has ever known. But for years, our out-of-date immigration system has actually harmed our economy and threatened our security. President Obama focused on immigration reform this morning in his weekly address, in anticipation of legislation scheduled to come to the Senate floor next week, urging that lawmakers begin to fix the "broken" system that has been out-of-date for years and in sad need of upgrading. He pointed to improvements made to the system over the past four yearsâbeefed-up border security, better use of technology, more effective deportation of criminals and focusing on the cause of what he called the "Dreamers," the young people brought here as children. But more comprehensive action is desperately needed. That's why, he said, the proposed legislation next week is so necessary, even if imperfect. The bill before the Senate isnât perfect. Itâs a compromise. Nobody will get everything they want â not Democrats, not Republicans, not me. But it is a bill thatâs largely consistent with the principles Iâve repeatedly laid out for commonsense immigration reform. What the imperfect bill would

Is The NFL Rigging The System To Put An Unqualified Referee In The Super Bowl?

# referees Jerome Boger will referee the Super Bowl. Jerome Boger probably doesn't deserve to referee the Super Bowl. Football Zebras, a site devoted solely to NFL officiating, reported on Jan. 20 that Boger's unspectacular in-season grades for his refereeing had been mysteriously changed after the fact to make him more qualified, and that he didn't have enough playoff experience under the league's own nebulous guidelines—guidelines that were apparently changed to make him eligible. Now Yahoo and the New York Times have picked up on the story, dragging out current and former officials who say there was a concerted effort on the part of the NFL to rig the system so that Boger would get the Super Bowl assignment. The league's response? Nuh-uh. More »

FAA To Launch Special Review Of The Boeing 787 Dreamliner Power System

Jan. 11 ( Bloomberg ) — U.S. regulators plan to review the power system Boeing Co. created for its 787 Dreamliner after a fire on a Japan Airlines Co. jet this week followed several incidents last year, a person familiar with the matter said. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration plans to announce the review today, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the details aren’t yet public. The 787’s design and manufacturing, which the FAA approved in 2011, will be part of the evaluation, the person said. The FAA didn’t immediately provide a comment. “We actively work with the FAA daily, across all of our product lines,” Marc Birtel, a Boeing spokesman in Seattle, said in an e-mailed statement while declining to comment on communications with the agency. “We are absolutely confident in the reliability and performance of the 787.” The review is in addition to a U.S. National Transportation Safety Board probe of the Jan. 7 fire that the agency said caused severe damage to the battery pack area of the 787 after passengers disembarked in Boston from a flight that began in Tokyo. A couple of the jets were grounded last month by a power fault, which Boeing said this week it had traced to flaws in power panels. The Dreamliner conserves fuel by using five times more electricity than other similar jets and by saving weight with a fuselage and wings made from composite materials, not aluminum. Some existing FAA regulations di

Nvidia unveils Grid Gaming System to jumpstart cloud gaming

Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang introduced the Nvidia Grid Gaming System tonight. That’s a mouthful, but the graphics chip maker says that it will enable gamers to play games in the cloud in a way that is much more convenient and efficient than can be done today. It means gamers can log into high-end games on a Smart TV, even though the TV has no serious 3D graphics computing power itself. The game can access technology in a web-connected data center — which Nvidia calls the Grid — to do the computing in the data center, or cloud, and then send the results down to the gamer’s machine, wherever the gamer is playing. This means that you could log into a laptop in your hotel room and play high-end games, even though your laptop is a relatively weak machine. The Grid, Huang said, will help fulfill the promise of cloud gaming. Huang announced the news at the swanky Rain nightclub in the Palms Hotel on the eve of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Nvidia also made it a lot easier for gamers to play their games on the cloud, so that they could access their saved games from multiple devices. Huang said it will be able to support 24 users on one computing node. That’s more concurrent users on a server than many other solutions can do, and it makes cloud gaming much more practical. Nvidia’s partners include Agawi, Playcast, G-Cluster, Cloudunion, Cyber Cloud and Ubitus. Nvdia’s Grid technology is its first fully integrated s
