50+ Fascinating Maps That Show the Difference in the Way Americans Talk

Last year when Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage at D10, it occurred to me that he had probably the hardest job in American business: certainly the hardest job in technology, following in Steve Jobs’ shadow . This year at D11, it’s clear Cook is up to the job; but he needs something new to talk about to move Apple firmly into the post-Jobs era. It’s been ages since the last Apple public event in September 2012 to introduce the iPhone 5. Since then, one of the premier sources of showmanship in the tech industry has kept a very low profile, surfacing only to deflect pesky questions about taxes and wax poetic about the magic of Apple for a network television audience . Those aren’t exactly the kinds of topics that have made Apple events and appearances must-see theater for going on six or seven years. Apple Tim Cook D11 Credit: Asa Mathat/D: All Things Digital And despite Cook’s best efforts to explain his thinking about how Apple works, he covered well-trodden ground Tuesday evening at the exclusive Terranea Resort just outside Los Angeles: Cook isn’t worried about Android’s market share. He’s more fixated on stats that show iOS users actually seem to use their devices way more than Android users. Cook isn’t worried about the scrutiny over Apple’s taxes. The U.S. tax system is ridiculous, and Apple navigates it the same way any multinational corporation does. Cook isn’t worried about TV. “Many of us agree there are things about the
Jo Brothers: Former Chief Evangelist of Apple Gives an Enchanting Talk on Social Media in New Zealand

The former chief evangelist of Apple, Guy Kawasaki, took center stage at the social media breakfast in Auckland on Wednesday, May 15 to share some of his enchanting wisdom on being enchanting and social media. More than 1,000 people packed The Langham Hotel in downtown Auckland, New Zealand for the two breakfast sessions with Guy, who is also an Apple Fellow, a special adviser to the Motorola business unit of Google and the best selling author of 12 books. In the first session, he explained that to be enchanting you need to be deep, intelligent, complete, empowering and elegant. The second session was about how to attract more social media followers and Guy's advice was to "start yesterday," segment your services, make a great profile, curate content and link to other pages, restrain yourself, add bling to your page, respond to people, stay positive or stay silent, and repeat all this. This was the third Air New Zealand social media breakfast and was a great success, with the crowd and in social media with the hashtag #AIRNZSMB #GuyKawasaki and #FlyAirNZ trending on Twitter in New Zealand. Guy Kawasaki is a special adviser to the Motorola business unit of Google. He is also the author of APE, What the Plus!, Enchantment, and nine other books. Previously, he was the chief evangelist of Apple. Kawasaki has a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA as well as an honorary doctorate from Babson College. See video highlights o

Microsoft has put Google's APIs to work to add Google Talk to Outlook.com after customer feedback demanded it. You can only use the Google service to instant message at the moment, with video and audio chat missing for now. "If it turns out a lot of people want the voice and video with Google, that's certainly something we'll go talk to them about," Dharmesh Mehta, senior director of Outlook.com, told The Verge . The Skype's the limit Of course, Microsoft shelled out a fairly significant chunk of change for Skype last year, which is also integrated into the webmail service complete with voice and video calling. You can commence G chatting in a sidebar on Outlook.com once you connect a Google account to the Microsoft service. We're expecting Google to rebrand its Google Talk products at Google I/O this week, when all its instant messaging and video calling shenanigans will fall under the banner of Google Hangouts – at least that's what our source tells us.
