Google on Thursday announced Gmail users will soon be able to search for relevant emails, Google Drive files, Calendar events, and so on. The feature, which shows results as you type, is rolling out to US English users “over the coming week.” Until now, Google has been running a trial of the feature . The company has now apparently deemed the test a success, and is thus ready to push it out, at least stateside. Here’s how it looks: As you can see, results in the Google search box feature not only the usual email messages, but also information that Google considers to be relevant, as well as content from other Google services. We can presume that the company will continue to expand the list beyond just Google Calendar and Google Drive. More to follow.

Will Yahoo Buying Tumblr Mean Less Privacy for Users?

Tumblr announced on Monday it was being bought by tech giant Yahoo! for $ 1.1 billion in one of the largest social media buyouts in years, but while the purchase will make Tumblr’s founders rich, it may bode poorly for the privacy protections of Tumblr users. In a recent report card from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), comparing which tech companies protect user’s data from government snooping, Yahoo received one of the lowest scores with only one out of five stars. Tumblr performed significantly better, receiving three stars for requiring a warrant for content, fighting for users’ privacy rights in Congress, and publishing law enforcement guidelines. A Yahoo spokesperson told reporters in January that the company was requiring warrants for email content data on fourth amendment grounds, joining Google others tech giants. It’s not yet clear how Yahoo will integrate Tumblr into the company, although Yahoo has promised “not to screw it up ” in a press statement and said Tumblr will be independently operated as a separate business with David Karp remaining as CEO. Online privacy law has lagged significantly behind technology advancements. Under the statute governing law enforcement access to digital communications — including private messages over Tumblr’s Fanmail and Yahoo email — the Electronic Privacy Communications Act (ECPA) of 1986, content data over 180 days old stored remotely only requires an administrative subpoen

On the eve of its developer conference, Google today revealed a new statistic about its Google+ Sign-In feature. The company says that 40 percent of Android users, when prompted, accept to download an app over-the-air. Seth Sternberg, the company’s Google+ Product Management Director, released a statement touting the news: When we launched Google+ Sign-In, we wanted to bridge the gap between desktop and mobile by allowing web users to instantly download a site’s Android app with just one click using our over-the-air install feature. Since launch, we’re now finding that 40% of people who are offered to install a website’s mobile app, accept. This is a significant benefit for consumers, who can now easily access their favorite sites on the go, and developers, who are experiencing greater mobile usage. Google+ Sign-In was released to compete against the likes of Facebook Connect and launched with 10 partners initially. When implemented, the service enabled developers to prompt users to download their app instead of viewing the content on the mobile browser. It also promotes sharing of data to Google’s social network. The Google+ team has been rather busy over the past few days leading up to Google I/O, which starts tomorrow. Yesterday, the company announced a new offensive aimed at mobile users whereby it would pull together parts of its search engine with its social network. The goal would be to create a new feature aimed at promot

One year to the day since it launched its dedicated business in China – Yinxiang Biji — Evernote has deepened its push into the country after launching Evernote Business platform, its services dedicated to serving business users, there. Speaking at the Global Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing — the same venue as last year’s launch — Evernote CEO explained why the company is bringing the business service to China at this time, having crossed 4 million registered Yinxiang Biji users. “The timing for Evernote Business couldn’t be better,” Libin said, explaining that companies are blossoming in China, from Beijing to Chengdu, with most only beginning to dip their toes into the world of enterprise software. “There are going to be millions of companies that will adopt serious productivity software for the first time.” Huge opportunity Libin is confident that Evernote Business is the answer, and that its early entry into the country will help the service to become the de-facto productivity tool for Chinese companies. Interestingly, he believes that putting the right tools into Chinese business’ hands is far easier than convincing businesses in US and other Western markets of the merits of Evernote’s enterprise-focused solution. “The huge advantage in China, unlike the US, is that these companies aren’t burdened by 20 years of horrible IT decisions. They don’t have all this crappy enterprise software that they can’t get rid of,” says

Facebook is focusing on feeds, including one for photos and one for brands. At a press conference held in Menlo Park Thursday Facebook announced a redesign for the news feed its users see when they visit its site or use its mobile app. The new news feed focuses on reducing clutter, making visually oriented posts like photos more prominent. It also makes filters for types of content front and center, such as dedicated feeds for posts by friends or posts by pages. Facebook will borrow the menu format it uses on its current mobile app, which slides out from one side to allow users to navigate. Facebook asserts that this will decrease clutter on the webpage and allow users to focus on content in the news feed. The separate feed categories (Photos, Friends, Following) will reorganize themselves based on which one users view most. A consistent menu across Facebook's apps and Web interface. The Following feed, which contains posts from pages, will show “every one of the posts they make,” stated Chris Struhar, the tech lead of feeds. The prominence of this feed seems to be an attempt to quell the protests of brands that have pushed back against Facebook’s pay-to-promote posts feature. Some brands have accused Facebook of purposefully damping traffic to generate revenue this way. Read 6 remaining paragraphs | Comments
